Happy Thanksgiving, From Coach Keali’i and the Results Training Team

As a Coach at Results I am ever searching for ways to enhance the experience of each member and  continue to excite a passion for health and fitness.  Please enjoy receiving weekly emails on various health, wellness, and fitness performance related topics.  May this correspondence continue to serve as an outlet for education and a resource opportunity for all those involved past, present and future.

I think it should be safe to say that each generation views the younger as having life much easier and even handed to them on a silver platter at times.  We have all heard the story of having to walk to school uphill in the snow, both ways, barefoot.  The lesson here to be told is when you have to work hard for something, it becomes much more valued and appreciated.  My grandfather imparted this hard knocks lesson to me when I was a child.  I remember helping him one morning, as the summer’s usual, from early morning harvest to delivery of the 2 ton cabbage order.  The treat upon delivery was we got to go out to do weekly grocery shopping, pick up lunch,  and stop by the nearby local frozen goody shop.  Load me up with a bulky, wet, 60 pound bag of heads in the cold morning dew- and I will load that truck and tractor through knee high soil and rotting cabbage to get that satisfaction of Papa’s approval and the 5 minute gratification of that frozen treat.
It did not take long for this reward system to accelerate the slippery slope, as the true lesson was not quite learned.  I figured, I show up and deserve a reward.  Wrong sonny. It was on one of those very same days of recourse I found myself looking up at a row of glistening hand made ukulele, made of beautiful koa wood.  To my understanding at the time, I figured I was a good kid, I showed up and worked today, he loved me and so my papa should buy this ukulele for me.  For that entire summer I learned the lesson of value.  He promised from then on to pay me for time spent in the fields; and with that money he would generously match my contribution to one day buy that coveted Kamaka Ukulele high up on the Longs Drugs  Store shelf.  Let me tell you expectations increased when money was on the line, but I still have that very same ukulele to this day in it’s case like brand new, mint condition.  Earned it, valued it, and took great care of it.
How many friends or family members have we seen with the entitlement mentality, expecting, and even demanding of more or better- only to be disparaged.  We see it now with kids in middle school and high school on their 5th and 6th iphone because they’ve either been broken or lost.  Of course, how could we not see and desire bigger and better in the culture we now live in brimming with reality TV. stars, credit cards, and plastic surgery?  The great of today is no longer of value, or outdone, come tomorrow.  Or as our grandparents would say, “kids these days don’t appreciate anything.”  It is about time we take time to slow down and recognize all that we should be grateful for.  The only shame is that we devote just one day a year to articulate our prevailing appreciation for all things great and small.
The first Americans, or pilgrims as we know them today, took days of religious fasting and followed by a harvest feast to give thanks each year; that they survived their Mayflower passage, the New England elements, the natives, and were able to cultivate a crop.   George Washington later proclaimed a related day to acknowledge gratitude of the ending of the American Revolution and beginning of our country.  Abe Lincoln declared the official U.S. holiday as we know it today at the height of the Civil War.  His urge was for Americans to pray God, “commend to his tender care of all who have become widows, orphans, mourners, and sufferers in the lamentable civil strife…[and to] heal the wounds of this nation.” And so officially we celebrate the last Thursday of November our day of Thanksgiving.
Most of us do not know such trials of civil strife or struggle to weather foreign season without provisions.  How grateful we should be that we can fill up gas in our cars, drive down the freeway to the store, buy a slaughtered and cleaned turkey, swing by Starbucks for an iced latte, turn a knob and cook that bird full of our favorite dressings, and sit around a warm table of mixed company to share the many blessings we truly appreciate in life.  In Hawaii we have a saying- Ho’omaika’i I Ka Mea Hiwahiwa; being grateful, and thereby making better that which you appreciate.  As hard as life may be, seek out and recognize the many things to be grateful for.  Family, health, education, a job, the roof over your head, warm bed, food on the table, clean air to breath, fresh water to drink, a shoulder to lean on, an ear to call out to, your sanity… these are some of the many reasons to give thanks.  Your Results family of staff, coaches, and teammates are sure to be included in on that list as well.  Those hard earned pounds down are just another way to show our appreciation for our bodies and the value of the life we live.  Thank you all for your continued trust in your coaches, transparency in the process, support and encouragement of your teammates, and always battling beyond the burn and sweat for the best you yet.  Hau’oli La Ho’omaika’i!

And then he is so anxious about the future that he does not enjoy the present; the result being that he does not live in the present or the future; he lives as if he is never going to die, and then dies having never really lived.”

Fitness After Dark is Back in West Sacramento

West Sacramento’s premiere training facility and gym is home to Sacramento’s most unique Fitness Party, Fitness After Dark!

Fitness After Dark is back on November 22nd in what promises to be one of our hottest Fitness After Dark events yet.

As usual, the glo sticks, DJ system and sounds will be out of this world and we will be bringing down the house with the team from Results the Training Gym and featuring Kris Wright and a R.I.P.P.E.D. session to rock your world!

This Fitness After Dark event will benefit the relief efforts in the Philippines related to the devastation with Typhoon Haiyan (Yolanda).   Participants can expect to easily burn up to 1,000 calories but more importantly make a difference to people in need.

Coach Carlos is a long time resident of Sacramento.  He joins Results the Training Gym after graduating with his Associates Degree and working at California Family Fit.   Carlos is looking forward to being part of your life changing Results.

As a child I grew up living a very inactive lifestyle which consisted of eating whatever I pleased and not doing any physical activity.   As a sophomore in High School I reached 230 pounds.  At that time I made the decision to play play football.   I still remember my first day i went out for try outs I had asked the coach if I could leave early because i was so out of shape.  That was the  most I had every worked out in my life and I could barely take it.    I am really happy my coach didn’t let me quit.   As a result of him not giving up on me and letting me letting me go it became a huge turning point in my life.  Up until that point I  had not realized how out of shape I was.  It only took 30 minutes of try out practice to open my eyes.

I stuck with in through my senior year and lost a good amount of weight with the new active lifestyle.   In my senior year I also took up Volleyball and the coaches really enjoyed the energy and attitude so I became the Freshmen coach.    After a couple years of coaching I realized this is where my passion was.   I decided to to work for and receive my associates degree in Exercise Science and also went and got certified as a personal trainer through NASM.  Since I love functional training and group I added a TRX Suspension certification in so I can continue to coach groups.   I have a lot of continued education plans but most of all I am excited to be a part of the Results Coaching Team.

I have learned that life is great as long as we it allow it to be.  I am excited to help empower you and I love to meet new people and  help them reach their goals.  After all your goal becomes my goal.

R.I.P.P.E.D. , the one stop body shock, is an exciting program @ Results the Training Gym and we are excited to round out our awesome team with a coach who has been teaching R.I.P.P.E.D. for almost 3 years now.

Janell Pewitt is a  Personal Trainer, Group Exercise and R.I.P.P.E.D instructor.  One of the thing she loves most is sharing her loved for R.I.P.P.E.D. with other people!

Growing up I was always very active. I tried many different sports until I fell in love with softball. I devoted most of my childhood and teenage years playing competitive softball. If I wasn’t playing, I was training with various coaches to improve my skills. Even though I was young at the time, I feel this is when I developed the desire to help others reach their goals.  I finally made the decision to enter into the fitness industry in 1999 as a Personal Trainer. I took time off to become a mother to my two beautiful girls and after having my second child, I decided it was time to help others reach their goals once again. This time around I started off as a Group Fitness Instructor. I LOVE the feeling of motivating a group of people to work hard and do something great for themselves!!

I make a commitment to provide a service that focuses on the individual and his/her needs. I strive to encourage, support, and challenge my clients to feel strong, confident and to find fitness programs they truly enjoy. Exercise enhances every aspect of physical and mental well being. At Results the Training Gym in West Sacramento as well as Results the 24 Hour Gym our goal is to create an empowering fitness experience and to be the best part of the day, every day.  We do that with a team of experienced, talented and motivated personal trainers…we like to refer to ourselves as Coaches.   Coaching goes far beyond exercise…it includes life coaching, nutrition coaching,, support, motivation and the ability to keep you moving.     We are always looking for talented team members to continue that mission.  We are very excited about introducing you to Coach Taylor, our newest team member at Results Gyms.

Taylor Catrett grew up with an active childhood, playing multiple sports all the way through high school.  During his time playing sports he learned the importance of proper preparation for competition.  Taking his love of sports he went on to play football for two years in junior college.  This experience heightened his drive to be in great shape.  After two years of college he joined the US Army and served for 4 ½ years.  During his service, his love for fitness grew and he became aware that training for any situation was very important. 

After his service he studied Kinesiology at San Jose State earning his Bachelors of Science in December 2012.  The accumulation of sports and the military gave birth to the love of training and helping others be the best that they can be.  He continued his education by receiving certification from NASM for both personal training and corrective exercise. He is also a certified strength and conditioning coach and is certified in the TRX. 

After working in the personal training business for 4 years he is excited about the change that Results the Training Gym and Results the 24 Hour Gym offers.  He has experience with bootcamps and group training. He believes that training the body is the key to health maintenance and prolonged quality of life.  Everyone can benefit from proper exercise and health awareness, no matter their current condition.  Through foam rolling, stretching, and intense exercise most problems can be fixed.  He enjoys seeing clients fight for their goals and achieving them beyond what they thought they could accomplish.

At Results the Training Gym, our goal is to be much more then a gym. Our goal isn’t to put you through the motions…it is to CHANGE LIVES!

It has been so exciting to be part of so many transformations and changes over the years…and now, after a few months in operation in West Sacramento we are excited to share with you some new successes from clients just like you.

If you have ever come in to train with our O DARK 30 team (at 5:30 am , every week day) you will know this guy. His name is Hans Maurits and his momma and friends call him Jr.

Hans is a friend of mine, we have worked together in our corporate day job for years. In fact, I taught him everything he knows (which is not saying a lot). For a long time Hans talked about getting started on a program with us at Results the 24 Hour Gym, but the location wasn’t right for him. As we were in the process of putting the finishing touches on the the gym, Hans made a commitment to get started. In fact, he was the first client who ever trained in the gym, along with me personally. It was a real rough start for Hans, because he received 100% of my personal Coach Matt Love until a few other folks started to join in the fun. One time on a run, I lost Hans and thought he had an asthma attack. I went running around the neighborhood looking for him with his inhaler. Turns out he was in the bathroom (he probablly won’t admit to throwing up, but I am pretty sure that is what he was doing). Hans was pretty out of shape, but determined. He came every single day, 3-4 days a week. Once we opened for business officially, he started coming 5 and even 6 times a week.

So, here we are on August 1st and Hans, the first official member of Results the Training Gym has hit a few huge milestones. First, he has become the FASTEST to 100. Hans has completed 100 training sessions in less time then anyone previously, from April – July he trained over 100 times!   Second, Hans is saving a lot more $$ then he is spending with us…he dropped his prescription, savings a ton of money and living healthier.   He did not just drop the perscription medicine, he has shed over 30lbs of body fat and 22lbs off the scale...and he isn’t done yet.

So you know that I will continue to push Hans harder then I push anyone else and the other Coaches and Clients are all welcome to do the same.  You know that I will continue to call him out , call him names and embarrass him and even humiliate him at times. I only do that because that is what we do to each other and we have know each other along time (plus he is starting to out run me…what the heck?!).   While all that goes on, deep down on the inside I am real proud of this guy.  He is proof that someone who isn’t that smart, kind of lazy and hard to take serious can unleash his inner warrior.     Just think, a 43 year old office working grandpa came in and became the first and fastest person to train 100 sessions plus shed a whole bunch of body fat!

In all seriousness, Hans is determined and committed to get in the best shape of his life. What is most impressive about these Results is Hans just recently started changing his eating habits and now has more impressive strength and weight loss coming!   I think you will see his determination when you come in and train with us at O Dark 30, but check out these impressive TRANSFORMATION RESULTS below. Meet Coach Ann

West Sacramento’s Best Training Gym is excited to introduce it’s clients to one of our great Results team members, Ann Spade.    Ann is joining the West Sacramento crew on Thursdays for bootcamp, corrective and her all time favorite R.I.P.P.E.D. classes.

Even though I always loved being physically active I never really had a regimented routine growing up. I took up gymnastics for 4 years when I was younger, but that was the only sport I ever participated in. Fast forward to when my son was born. I was 135 lbs before I was pregnant and when he was born I was 192 lbs. I lost a bit of it afterwards but still maintained a size 12 in pants. I never really worried about my weight until one day my size 12 jeans were too small. I refused to purchase a bigger size so that’s when my fitness journey truly began. Thanks to taking a more active role in educating myself about fitness, I had a new found discipline and enthusiasm for exercise and eating right! I incorporated strength training, cardio, and eating portioned, cleaner meals at least 5 times a day and even allowed myself a free day to indulge. This philosophy worked. I gained lean muscle, I was toned and defined, and my endurance and stamina was the best it had been since gymnastics! I spent time learning more and more from my own research and talking with fitness competitors and fellow fitness enthusiasts. I even had my own gym membership and used it often. With a few of life’s transitions I since fell out of my fitness routines and had my own bouts of weight gain and loss in the following years. I did what I could on my own by running, staying active, and working out at home. In 2012 I was introduced to the R.I.P.P.E.D. fitness program and became certified. I was at a stable size 9 until after teaching a couple months of R.I.P.P.E.D. I am now down to a size 4 and regained lean muscle that I slowly lost. Now teaching several R.I.P.P.E.D. and botcamp sessions  a week and working with a team of coaches at Results the positive fitness influence is being trickle fed to me, my knowledge of nutrition, health, and fitness continues to expand and my foundation for fitness is stronger.

Matt’s footnotes:  Ann is kind of modest, but she just rocked two Tough Mudder events in the last 4 months….no small feat!    When Ann isn’t coaching clients at Results you can catch her with the KQCA My 58 Team at local events like Concerts in the Parks and other local fun events.    Ann is kind of a big deal on YOU TUBE too, you can check out her and her friend Candy and a great R.I.P.P.E.D video here

Ann is excited to be making her Zumba debut along with her friend Marrisa Hodge on August 16th at Fitness After Dark.  We will feature a night club atmosphere with DJ, a killer light show and R.I.P.P.E.D. and Zumba Fitness that will get your heart racing!     Say hello to Ann at Results the Training Gym every Thursday and for our special Fitness After Dark on Friday August 16th.

Allie began her path in the fitness industry after venturing into the corporate world and disliking the many hours of being anchored to a desk.  To ease the stress, lack of activity, weight gain, and fatigue, she joined Results the 24 Hour Gym as a hopeful client.  With help from Bootcamps and her personal trainer, she saw a tremendous improvement in her overall quality of life and daily attitude.  The power and vitality of a healthy body soon became her obsession as she overcame new goals and found strength she never knew she possessed.  Now after much anticipation, she is eager to be on the other side of the equation and become “Coach Allie.”    


After exactly one year of training with Results Training and hundreds of hours in her internship, Coach Allie is ready to rock and help more people meet their health and fitness goals.


Say hello to Coach Allie as she enthusiastically leads Results Team Training, Move Better and bootcamp sessions in West Sacramento at Results the Training Gym!   Behind the scenes, Allie is proud to utilize her Bachelor’s in Business Marketing to support Results in improving more people’s lives.  Her athletic background in many sports such as soccer, dance, karate, and many other activities such as running and strength training grants her a broad knowledge in many different movements and performance-based goals.  Coach Allie will use her first-hand experience to guide you down a new and invigorating path in the health and fitness world.  She is excited to make your experience with Results the best part of your day, every day!

Trust me, I’ve been there.

Happy Monday from Coach Damian and the rest of us at Results the Training Gym.

I hope everyone had a great July 4th Holiday fully recharged and focused on your goals for the 2nd half of 2013.  I know it is not easy to maintain the focus, especially around family, friends and co-workers…but you are worth it.

Trust me, I’ve been there.


RE: ‘My kid’s leftover birthday cake is in the break room.  ATTN: Cookies from our bbq by the front counter.  FYI: Chips and dip from the football party in the projection room.’  These are literally a few emails I’ve experienced while working in the corporate world.  Let’s face it, people aren’t as passionate about their health and fitness as YOU are.  As selfish as it sounds sometimes you’ve got to look out for number one.  The workplace is teaming with mini landmines to sabotage the success’s we’ve accomplished. 


What are some ways we can avoid some of these day to day pitfalls while in the workplace?


1)    Keep Hydrated  All to often we mistake thirst for hunger, especially when the mid-afternoon cravings hit. Staying hydrated  keeps your stomach from becoming completely empty, which keeps hunger levels down.


Drinking a glass of water before a meal can also help to fill your stomach temporarily,   making it easier to manage your portion sizes when you actually sit down to eat.


2)    Have your own ‘healthy snack drawer’ at work.  I’m not kidding when I say that I had an arsenal of healthy mixed nuts, protein powder baggies and more protein bars than you could shake a stick at.  Miss a lunch, or get bombarded by the red velvet cupcakes you can then reach into your trusty drawer with an alternative.




3)    Stick to Natural fruits and Vegetables because they are comprised primarily of water.  Try these examples:



Watermelon contains 92 percent water, 8 percent natural sugar, and essential electrolytes such as, calcium, magnesium, potassium and sodium. Watermelon is rich in Vitamin C, beta carotene and lycopene which will give the body protection from UV light.


Grapefruit contains only 30 calories and is comprised of 90 percent water. Phytonutrients called limonoids, found in grapefruits, can be detoxifying and may inhibit tumor formation of cancers.


Coconut water is comprised of 95 percent water. It is one of the most popular ways to hydrate the moderate intensity athlete.


Broccoli contains 90 percent water and many health supporting compounds which are anti-inflammatory, others protect DNA with their antioxidant capacity, anti-cancer nutrients are found in broccoli and those that help to detoxify the vast number of potential toxins that we encounter each day.


Cantaloupe which provides 29 calories and is made up of 89 percent water is an exceptionally good fruit for supporting energy production through its efficient carbohydrate metabolism and ability to keep the blood sugar stable.


Celery is considered to be a powerful electrolyte food. As little as two to three mineral-rich stalks of celery can replenish an athlete’s sodium, potassium, magnesium, calcium, phosphorus, iron and zinc levels after intense exercise.



4)    Finally get good at saying “No thank you”. Every decision you make, from here on out, should be determined with your main goals in mind.  EVERY weekend, a friend is coming into town. Someone will ALWAYS be having a birthday.  Vegas ISN’T going anywhere anytime soon.
